Police Ambush Bandits and Recover Cows

Man Dies in Cattle Raid, Police Report Success Against Rural Crime.

A shooting at a home in Maralal killed a 23-year-old man early Thursday. The attack happened in Ngano village when armed men tried to take cows from the property.

Leonard Lendunda heard a noise outside his house. He stepped out to check. The raiders shot him in the chest, killing him right there. They then took five cows from the yard as people called for help.

Local police teams came fast after hearing shots. They chased the raiders toward the Opiroi area. The police and raiders traded gunfire. The raiders ran away, leaving the stolen cows behind. The police gave the animals back to the family.

Police took Mr. Lendunda's body to a nearby hospital. They started looking into his death. They want to find the men who did this.

The government says attacks like this have gone down. Last year, they trained 1,702 new local police helpers in six areas - Baringo, Samburu, Laikipia, Meru, Turkana, and West Pokot. They also gave guns back to 400 helpers in Elgeyo Marakwet and Isiolo.

The government made 126 new local offices in these areas. These offices help keep peace and make things work better. They also help police act faster when bad things happen.

Police found 172 hidden guns last year. This happened during their work to stop crime in North Rift. The work made cattle stealing drop by more than half.

Before, raiders took 63,054 animals. After the police worked hard, the raiders only took 23,668 animals. Police found 10,173 stolen animals and gave them back.

Police caught 250 bad people. Among them were 14 leaders. This happened during their big plan called Operation Maliza Uhalifu North Rift. The plan started in February 2023.

The plan works in nine areas. These include Baringo, Turkana, Samburu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Marsabit, Laikipia, Isiolo, and Meru. Police and army personnel work together there to make these places safe.

Police say some parts of these areas need extra care, so they marked them as dangerous. But their work makes things better every day.
