Presidency Hits Back at El-Rufai, Accuses Him of Small Man Syndrome

President Bola Tinubu's team hit back at former Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai after he criticized the current administration. Presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga wrote on social media that el-Rufai suffers from small man syndrome. The response came after el-Rufai appeared on television to attack Tinubu's presidency. El-Rufai claimed the president would need a miracle to win again during the 2027 elections. He said his group conducted polls showing most Nigerians disapprove of Tinubu's performance.

The former governor stated that 91 percent of people across the country dislike how Tinubu runs the government. He added that even Lagos residents show 78 percent disapproval for the president. Onanuga responded by sharing quotes from former President Olusegun Obasanjo's book about el-Rufai. The memoir describes el-Rufai as someone who cannot stay loyal to anyone for very long. Obasanjo wrote that el-Rufai lies often and attacks people who helped him.

El-Rufai switched political parties earlier this year from the ruling party to an opposition group. He left the All Progressives Congress and joined the Social Democratic Party during March. The former governor works with other opposition leaders to challenge Tinubu during the next presidential race. Obasanjo had appointed el-Rufai as a federal minister years ago before their relationship soured. The current dispute shows growing tensions between Tinubu supporters and his critics.
