Ryzen Threadripper 9980X outpaces 7980X in Geekbench tests

AMD's latest Threadripper 9980X processor demonstrates superior performance against its predecessor in recent benchmark testing. The workstation chip achieved 3259 points in single-core tests and 28,666 points in multi-core evaluations using Geekbench software. Performance improvements reach 11 percent for single-threaded tasks and 16 percent for multi-threaded operations compared to the Threadripper 7980X. The processor maintains 64 cores and 128 threads while using advanced Zen 5 architecture. Clock speeds increased with a 3.2 GHz base frequency and 5.4 GHz boost capability.

The chip consumes 350 watts of power, matching its predecessor's energy requirements. Enhanced efficiency emerges from the architectural improvements and higher operating frequencies. AMD targets enthusiasts and professionals who require substantial computing power for demanding applications. The company also plans to release Threadripper PRO 9000WX processors featuring 96 cores and 192 threads for enterprise customers. Retailers have begun accepting pre-orders with expected availability before month's end.
