Basketball fans across Kenya mourned after Paul Otula died Thursday morning from heart failure at his Nairobi home. His body went to Lee Funeral Home later that day. He first became Kenya Basketball Federation president in 2008 when he beat George Omondi with 26 votes to 5 at Nyayo Stadium. He won again in 2021 against Cynthia Mumbo with 57 votes to 45.
Otula was the principal of Maseno School for many years. Under his supervision, students learned both academic subjects and sports. After his 2021 election, he also served on the National Olympic Committee of Kenya. The federation called him a dedicated leader and mentor whose service changed the game forever.
Former rival Mumbo remembered talking with him just last week. She said they respected each other despite competing for the same position. The federation promised to share more details about what happens next. People from all parts of sports continue to praise what Otula did for basketball in Kenya.
