Shubman Gill replaces Rohit Sharma as ODI captain

India's cricket selectors appointed Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma ahead of the Australia tour. Shreyas Iyer will serve as vice-captain for the three-match series. Veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli return to the squad, but Jasprit Bumrah was rested from ODI duties.

Former India cricketer Madan Lal praised the selection panel's choice as a strategic decision for long-term planning. He noted that Gill's leadership experience in Test cricket demonstrates his readiness for the role. The transition prepares India for the 2027 World Cup campaign.

Suryakumar Yadav will continue leading the T20I team with Gill as deputy. Former England player David Gower suggested Rohit and Kohli likely will not participate in the 2027 World Cup. The leadership change marks a shift toward younger players taking command of Indian cricket's future direction.
