Starmer, Portugal recognise Palestine, Netanyahu fumes

Britain and Portugal plan to recognize Palestinian statehood on Sunday before United Nations discussions begin. The United Kingdom becomes the first G7 nation pursuing this diplomatic path. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy confirmed the government position while Portugal's foreign ministry announced formal declaration plans. This symbolic gesture precedes the UN General Assembly where approximately ten countries may adopt similar positions.

France, Australia, Belgium and Canada prepare to follow this recognition during the New York meetings. The Palestinian Authority has requested this acknowledgment for years according to British officials. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the decision as rewarding terrorism. Hamas attacked Israel in October 2023, killing 1,219 people and sparking the current conflict. Israel's military response has resulted in 65,208 Palestinian deaths according to Gaza health authorities that UN agencies consider reliable.
