The World Bank authorized an $80 million initiative to enhance transportation infrastructure across Haiti's southern and northern regions, targeting vital routes including National Road 2 connecting Les Cayes to Port de Saint-Louis du Sud and Departmental Road 41 approaching Dominican Republic territory near Ouanaminthe. Public Works Minister Raphael Hosty emphasized the program supports economic decentralization through improved logistics networks while connecting communities to healthcare, education and employment opportunities.
Country Manager Anne-Lucie Lefebvre noted Haitian infrastructure faces substantial threats from natural disasters including hurricanes, flooding and landslides that regularly isolate communities and increase security risks, particularly affecting women's mobility. The program will rehabilitate critical structures such as La Digue, Côte-de-Fer and Mahot bridges while upgrading 100 kilometers of rural roadways in vulnerable departments like Nippes, Grand'Anse and Sud-est.
Implementation is expected to benefit approximately 2.9 million residents through enhanced transportation access while generating 300,000 employment days and advancing gender inclusion through technical training programs for women in construction equipment operation and road maintenance sectors.
