Binga Driver Fined 500 After Van Crash Kills Passenger

Hapymore Mudenda from Binga crashed his truck and killed someone. The 30-year-old driver faces a fine of up to $500 or up to six months in jail. Courts found him guilty of culpable homicide after he admitted fault. The accident happened on the Siabuwa-Mujeri Road in October 2023. Mudenda lives in Kalungwizi Village under Chief Siabuwa.

Mudenda drove an Isuzu panel van with 13 people inside. The vehicle flipped over at the 21-kilometer mark on the gravel road. He lost control because he was driving fast on the narrow road. Passengers sitting in the open back got thrown out during the crash. Several people suffered injuries when the truck overturned.

Martha Mutale got trapped inside the vehicle during the accident. She suffered serious injuries and needed hospital treatment immediately. Doctors at Binga District Hospital treated her first. Medical staff later moved her to United Bulawayo Hospitals for better care. Mutale died two weeks after the crash.

Prosecutor Wisdom Shava told the court about the accident details. Mudenda appeared before Magistrate Rumbidzai Kabasa at Hwange court. The driver pleaded guilty to causing the death. Shava said Mudenda failed to take reasonable steps to prevent the crash. The court decided on the fine and prison sentence.
