Two top Bulawayo City officials are in hot water over bribery claims. The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested Deputy Mayor Edwin Ndlovu and Finance Committee Chair Mpumelelo Moyo.
The officials got into trouble after they asked for money from a business that wanted to build in the city. ZACC spokesperson Simiso Mlevu says they wanted $20,000 from Labenmon Investments. The company had asked to make a cement mixing plant.
The story began last year when Labenmon tried to get land but failed. They tried again this April and got approval for 5.6 hectares. That's when the trouble started. The two officials went to Tsitsi Mapfumo from Labenmon and asked for cash. They said the money would be split among 20 city council members who helped approve the deal.
Someone told ZACC about this, and now both men are behind bars at Mzilikazi Police Station. They will face a judge on Saturday. Ndlovu serves as Ward 8 Councillor, while Moyo represents Ward 26.
