Fake game ranger jailed for $10K scam

A fake park ranger in Zimbabwe just got three years for scamming people with bogus job offers. William Clive Makayi from Karoi pretended to be a Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority officer, conning over ten thousand dollars from victims by promising non-existent training and jobs at places like Lake Chivero. He used phony uniforms and mobile money accounts, including one in his wife's name, to collect fees for uniforms and training. People from several towns fell for the scheme over a two-year period.

Police eventually got a tip and recovered official-looking uniforms during the investigation. The Karoi Magistrates’ Court found him guilty on multiple counts of fraud and impersonating a public official, handing down a 36-month prison sentence. The case highlights a recurring scheme where con artists exploit desperate job seekers by impersonating officials from government agencies, using props and digital payment methods to appear legitimate.
