Vintage equipment was loved for its DAC (digital-to-analog converter). Many used 12-bit conversion. These DACs were often non-linear, creating artifacts, aliasing, and subtle distortion. These effects gave the sound warmth and character. Now, Exakt can mimic a 12-bit DAC.
