Mahama Warns Against Profiting from Hajj

President Mahama stated the Hajj journey should not serve as a revenue source. During the groundbreaking event for the new Hajj Village on February 28, he emphasized that any remaining funds from Hajj operations should support projects helping Zongo neighborhoods. The president explained they established a special group to manage current pilgrimage arrangements because time was limited after taking office. He mentioned bringing together capable individuals under the leadership of Alhaji Collins Dauda to handle preparations.

The president plans to form an official Hajj Board with appointed leadership after current arrangements conclude. He clearly stated that the Hajj must remain non-commercial rather than structured as a business venture. According to Mahama, neither the organizing committee nor the future board should seek financial gains from managing sacred pilgrimages. He directed that even small amounts left over should benefit those facing hardship or fund community improvements.

These comments arrive as preparation continues for upcoming pilgrimages. The organizing committee has asked all potential travelers and authorized agents to finish payments and complete the necessary documentation by March 13, 2025. They have created systems to assist pilgrims who have paid their fees fully with obtaining passports more easily. Authorized agents can use these resources to simplify travel preparation for the people they represent.

The committee recently made pilgrimages more affordable by reducing package costs. The price dropped from 75,000 Ghana cedis to 62,000 Ghana cedis for 2025 travel arrangements. This significant decrease aims to provide financial assistance and allow more Muslim citizens to complete their religious responsibilities. The cost reduction represents an effort to make sacred journeys accessible to broader segments of the faithful community.
