Man Survives Being Hit by Train in Bulawayo

In a shocking incident that occurred on Saturday morning, Everton Sithole, a 62-year-old homeless man from Bulawayo, narrowly escaped death after being hit by a moving train while he was sleeping on the railway tracks under the Luveve Flyover. The older man sustained injuries to his head and legs and is currently receiving treatment at Mpilo Hospital. According to Inspector Abednico Ncube, the Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, the train driver employed by the Beitbridge-Bulawayo Railway initially thought that the object on the tracks was a pile of garbage. However, as the train approached, the driver realized it was a person covering their head with a cloth. Sithole raised his head just before the train hit him, and he was struck by the right side of the train's bumper. The driver managed to stop the train about 15 meters from the accident site and called for an ambulance to take Sithole to the hospital.

Inspector Ncube reported that Sithole's condition is stable, and he urged the public to take care of their relatives in need to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) also expressed concern over the high number of train accidents involving people. Andrew Kunambura, NRZ's public relations manager, confirmed that there were eight separate incidents over five days in October 2024, injuring five people. In one case, a man was found with a broken leg on the rail tracks in Makwiro after being hit by a train. The NRZ urges the public to be vigilant when crossing railway tracks and for motorists to stop at all level crossings and only proceed when they are sure that no train is approaching. This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of sleeping or walking on railway tracks and the importance of staying alert and aware of one's surroundings.
