Myanmar police arrest 27 online gamblers in raids

Police in Myanmar arrested 27 people—17 men and 10 women—for online gambling in Yangon and Mandalay during October. Officers seized 49 mobile phones, 2 laptops, 2 tablets, and 8 vehicles. On 14 October, they detained 14 people at a resort in Mingaladon Township with 23 phones and three vehicles. The next day, three more were arrested in Yankin Township with five phones and three vehicles.

On 16 October, authorities took three suspects in Pyin Oo Lwin and two in Mandalay’s Mahaaungmyay Township, along with phones, laptops, and vehicles. On 20 October, five others were held in Dagon Myothit (South) with nine phones and two tablets. The suspects admitted they signed up as agents for several gambling sites and promoted them on Facebook and Telegram groups, sharing Viber numbers to attract users. They created gambling accounts for those who contacted them. Those who recruited more users could rise to senior or super senior agent roles. They used multiple bank and digital payment accounts to move and withdraw money.
