Refurbishment of the Morton Jaffray Water Treatment Plant is underway, aiming to ease Harare’s long-running water supply issues. Built in the 1950s, the facility has struggled to meet current demand. The upgrades are part of a water supply deal involving the government, the City of Harare, and Helcraw Water, aimed at boosting capacity and improving service.
Mayor Jacob Mafume said the plant's output will increase from 350 to 520 megaliters, with new pumps already installed. Harare Metropolitan Minister Charles Tawengwa praised the progress, linking it to national goals for better service delivery. Resident groups have welcomed the public-private partnership model, calling it a step toward consistent supply.
To support the plan, the city will replace 6,400 kilometers of pipes, aided by new vehicles delivered on Monday.
