Can y'all define for me what ngozi means?
Ngozi can be defined as mweya, mhepo (or spirit) that will come back to haunt the entire family of a person who takes the life of another individual usually in a savage way.
So what's the difference between ngozi and a demon. Don't demons torment people?
muChivanhu "ngozi" is a spirit of vengeance which awakens in retribution i.e. the spirit of a dead person who was murdered in cold blood.
This avenging spirit will torment the perpetrator's family until a traditional custom of "kuripa ngozi" takes place, or alternatively a ritual of "kurasira ngozi" is done.
How is the ritual of 'kurasira ngozi' done muChivanhu?
Kurasira ngozi is a means of shifting the focus of an avenging spirit by putting it into another medium such as livestock.
Obviously, the entire point of this act is to get rid of ngozi, where if a random person comes across that particular livestock that carries the ngozi spirit and he slaughters it for food, the avenging spirit will then be passed on to him or her.
That sounds like witchcraft.
Ngozi isn't a spirit of benevolence instead it is simply an avenging spirit, but demons can be both benevolent and savage too.
Your last point doesn't it apply to mashavi as well?
It does because muChivanhu there are two types of mashavi (or mashave):
On the contrary, muchiKristu there are no mashavi regarded as benevolent except they are all grouped into one category as demons.
- mashavi akaipa
- mashavi akanaka
